SteamOS compatible games: how to check before you buy

The fastest way to find out whether a game is likely to work on SteamOS is to look at its current Steam Deck compatibility information on Steam. Do this before buying a title for a handheld. It is more reliable than an old forum list and more specific than asking whether SteamOS "supports" the genre.

To place this factor in a title-level compatibility check, see SteamOS Compatibility.

Find the Deck Verified status

When this affects the next part of the task, use SteamOS Handhelds to keep the check specific.

Verified and Playable are different

Verified games work on Steam Deck by default. Playable games work but may need manual configuration, such as controller changes or a mouse/touchscreen for a launcher. Both can be worth playing; the distinction tells you how much setup to expect.

Unsupported and Unknown need caution

Unsupported means Valve does not currently consider the game playable on Steam Deck. Unknown means Valve has not tested it. Neither label is a good place to assume an effortless purchase.

Read the compatibility details

Look for the failing criteria

Steam shows why a game is Playable or Unsupported in its compatibility section. The problem might be text size, controller use, a launcher, or a deeper compatibility issue. The reason tells you whether it is acceptable for your setup.

Check multiplayer separately

For multiplayer games, look for anti-cheat information and current player reports. Valve's Proton documentation explains that support can depend on developer enablement, so a title's online mode may have a different result from its single-player mode.

Test before you customize

Keep the first run simple

Use updated SteamOS, default game settings, and the controller you plan to use. If the title fails, read the compatibility note before adding launchers, desktop applications, or network changes.

Do not confuse speed with support

A faster connection can help downloads or online play, but it cannot convert an Unsupported game into a supported one. A VPN does not change that boundary either.
