The Purism Librem 5 doesn't use Android or iOS, instead, it runs on a free open-source operating system named PureOS – adapted from Linux. Purism developed the Librem 5 with security in mind and ensured that it has privacy protection by default. Its data is completely cut off from the carrier’s firmware and cellular towers, this is because the cellular modem and main CPU and memory are separated.

Features that qualify it as a secure alternative to iPhone:

  • The user has control over how data is transferred within the phone, applications can be isolated from each other. Location services are automatically disabled from the offset, allowing users to choose what information is shared between apps.
  • Librem 5 has three hardware-based kill switches that disable the camera and microphone, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapters, and switch off all network connectivity, including GPS tracking. The users of the Librem 5 benefit from the liberty to opt to install a compatible GNU/Linux OS of their choice as an alternative.
  • Apple and Google normally only support their mobile devices with updates for two to three years. Purism, in contrast, has committed to providing “lifetime” software updates.

Have you ever heard of a mobile phone with built-in authentication, backup battery, encryption, and key management software?

The Bittium has two operating systems, one OS is Android 9, and the other is Bittium’s own Secure OS. Users can switch between the two for complete data separation (dual boot functionality).

The Tough Mobile 2C routinely runs advanced security checks at boot time, this should offer the security-conscious some peace of mind. It also has a dedicated button that sets it into privacy mode, which effectively disables the audio, video, and Bluetooth instantly. Should anyone try to intrusively break into it, the Bittium will destroy all the data stored in it.

The Blackphone PRIVY 2.0 offers encrypted voice and video calls, as well as text messages. It comes pre-installed with Silent Circle’s Silent Phone application and includes a subscription to the service.

Features that qualify it as a secure alternative to iPhone:

  • The Blackphone PRIVY 2.0 has pre-installed encryption to protect the data on your device. Local applications require permission before saving, storing, or tracking any information.
  • Like the best VPNs, Blackphone keeps no calls and messages data logs. PRIVY has no access to your data and can’t decrypt your traffic.
