How to Clear Search History in the Top Web Browsers

Updated on July 13, 2021: From now on, traffic filtering, malware protection, and suspicious DNS activity blocking are available as a part of the separate DNS Firewall app.

You are probably aware of the fact that your browser retains a record of the information you enter in the search bar. The purpose of this process is to use those keywords and terms to give you suggestions next time you use the browser for searching.

While this functionality is considered to be convenient, it can also seriously compromise your privacy, as anyone who has access to your computer can see your previous searches, which you may prefer to keep a secret. If you are concerned about your privacy, you should regularly delete your search history as well as other history tracks from your browser.

Below we offer you simple guides on how to clear search history in the top browsers, including Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Internet Explorer.

How do I clear search history in Mozilla Firefox?

Step 1: Click the Firefox menu, located in the upper right corner of the browser window, and click Options
Step 2: In the Options dialog, click the Privacy icon → History → clear your recent history
Step 3: Set a check mark next to the Form & Search History option. If you do not want to clear any other types of information, such as cookies or cache, remove all other check marks found in the list
Step 4: Now click the Clear Now button. The process will be completed almost immediately

Note: By clicking Start Private Browsing, which is available from the Mozilla Firefox menu, your browsing history won’t be recorded at all.

How do I clear search history in Safari?

Step 1: Click the Safari icon in the main menu at the top of your screen, and select the Clear History and Website Data option
Step 2: A dialog window will offer the following options: the last hour, today, today and yesterday, and all history. Select the desired option
Step 3: Click the Clear History button

If you’d like to delete all history and website data, regardless of when it was stored, then follow these two easy steps:

Step 1: Click the Safari icon in the main menu at the top of your screen, and select the Preferences option
Step 2: Click the Privacy icon, and then click the Remove All Website Data button

How do I clear search history in Opera?

Step 1: Open your browser, and click the History icon
Step 2: Go to the Clear browsing data tab
Step 3: Select the information you want to delete, such as browsing and download history, cache and cookies, passwords, etc., and click the Clear browsing data button

How do I clear search history in Internet Explorer?

Step 1: Click the Tools icon, located in the upper right corner, and choose Internet Options
Step 2: In the General tab, find the Browser History section and click the Delete button
Step 3: In the next window, make sure that History is checked and then click Delete

Note: You can also select other sections for the deletion. For instance:
– Temporary internet files and website files that are the copies of web pages, images, and media that are saved for a faster viewing
– Cookies and website data that include files or databases stored on your computer by websites to save preferences, and improve website performance
– Saved information that you have typed into forms
– Saved passwords that are automatically filled in when you sign in to a website you have previously visited, etc.

If you don’t want to clear search history manually, you may use a clear history software that lets you automatically clear search history and other history tracks stored by your browser. This is true for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome (we will cover a way to clear search history for this browser in a separate post), and Opera web browser.
