Happy International Computer Security Day! Let’s Raise Awareness Together

Updated on July 13, 2021: From now on, traffic filtering, malware protection, and suspicious DNS activity blocking are available as a part of the separate DNS Firewall app.

Winter is almost upon us. But wait, we still have one significant worldwide event in November. It is an International Computer Security Day (CSD) that was first held back in 1988. This day serves as an important reminder to reflect on the challenges of our computer security and the imminent threats of hacking, phishing, spyware, and worms.

Just think about the recent statistics that says there is currently around 3.5 billion of internet users worldwide, compared to 2.21 billion in the previous year. So many people can theoretically become a victim of cyber criminals right now.

Of course, computers, tablets, smartphones, and other smart devices are making our lives easier each day by providing more convenient, more efficient, and faster communication. At the same time, they have created many privacy and security vulnerabilities to their owners. The CSD holiday encourages us to stay on top of the computer security, and to take steps to make and maintain our private data protected.

A guide on how to celebrate the holiday

It is commonly believed that online security is something out of this world so no one ends up doing anything until an irreparable harm has been caused. Let’s break this practice. KeepSolid team calls every internet user to start taking security measures before something bad happens. As the Latin proverb says, “If you want peace, prepare for war.”

Below we have listed the most important activities to celebrate the holiday with sense:

Activity # 1

Using the same password for all your online accounts? Or you haven’t changed all your passwords for a long time? You may be an easy target for cyber criminals. Tomorrow is the perfect time to spend some time updating your passwords. For this purpose you may use a password manager that not only generates random passwords for you, but also saves them so you don’t have to keep everything in mind. And finally, get rid of the “sticky note” from under your keyboard that has all your passwords written on it!

Activity #2

Update all your anti-spyware and anti-malware software, as well as OS. Remember, cyber criminals are getting smarter and making better use of technology. You can enable automatic updates so you will never have to manually update again. It may take you up to 5 minutes to work out how to do this, but will save you lots of time in future. After that, you can run a full system scan. It will eliminate all suspicious files. Delete unneeded or suspicious files from your computer. Get help from an expert if you are unsure.

Activity #3

Backup your data, including documents and photographs. You can keep your backups on a cloud for easy access, or/and send copies to a more secure offline location. It is also possible to turn on automatic backups.

Activity #4

If you own a business or are responsible for organizing events at your workplace, hold a computer security seminar for your employees and co-workers. If you are good at this subject, why not educate your colleagues? The question becomes more important than ever so take the opportunity to help raise awareness. Tell people about challenging computer security issues that we all face every day, and how we can reduce the risk.

Activity #5

Start using a well-trusted VPN service, if you haven’t yet. VPN Unlimited is one of the best security solutions on the market that offers strong security, absolute online privacy, free access to restricted websites, blazing connection speed, and many more top-notch features to make your web surfing experience safe and enjoyable.
